Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still at college. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home that belonged to a member on the jury. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was given and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio following her graduation from college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
